"What's that you say? Time machine?"
Centuries of Prague's History at Your Feet
Well before you get too carried away or think young Molly is loosing her mind
we should probably mention that we are actually just letting you in on another
of Molly's secrets. If you are traveling from old town square to Molly's
you will actually pass through centuries of Prague's history in just a few
hundred
metres.
Start at the Clock
Starting at the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square you will experience
Prague from as early as the 1100s. Moving across old town square you will see
Gothic architecture, dating form the 1300s and 1400s. However, as you move
toward Molly's you will begin to see a change in the shape and layout of the
streets and when you reach U Obecniho Dvora (Molly's Street) you will that
you have moved into the 1600s and beautiful baroque and renaissance architecture
will greet you.
Indeed, Molly's stands on the border between the Gothic Old Town and the more
recent New Town, started in the Renaissance period.
If you stand outside Molly's
and look to your left you will the most amazing piece of Prague Baroque architecture
- and although the building is somewhat in need of repair, it is nonetheless
a beautiful structure.
It also marks the start of a small town within a town,
and Molly recommends that you take a few minutes to walk around the narrow
thoroughfares that surround her...you will experience streets as they were
400 years ago! Narrow alnes, with low doorways, street level windows and
some of
the first municipal street lighting all combine to give you a genuine historical
experience...
... so not quite a time machine, but sure you know what she means!
